Little Free Library project in New York City

The Little Free Library movement aims to “build a sense of community” and “promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide.”

Little Free Library project in New York City - The Architectural League of New York and PEN World Voices Festival saw an opportunity to bring Little Free Libraries — which have appeared in more than 2,500 locations around the world over the past three years — to Manhattan on the occasion of the 2013 IDEAS CITY festival, a biennial event that considers the future of cities with a particular focus on the importance of arts and culture.

A jury selected 10 architecture teams to each design and install a Little Free Library in collaboration with a host community organization. The libraries were installed throughout the East Village and Lower East Side during the festival’s StreetFest, and will continue to be in use at least through September 1st, possibly into the fall.
