Obama’s favoriete bookshop ’57th Street Books’ maakt deel uit van een bijzondere coöperatie…
Het Nieuwsblad.be van vandaag – 20 januari 2009, Inauguration Day – heeft een artikel over Chicago waarin verslag wordt gedaan over de hotspots in Chicago die gelinkt zijn aan Barack Obama. Zijn woonbuurt, favoriete kapper, eethuis e.d.
Ook zijn favoriete boekhandel komt ter sprake:
De boekenwinkel van Obama
Ook bij 57th Street Books, een erg geliefde onafhankelijke én betere boekenwinkel in het hartje van Obama’s neighborhood Hyde Park, rinkelt de kassa een pak vaker sinds de wereld weet dat Obama hier geregeld binnenstapte.
‘De familie Obama was altijd erg begaan met deze buurt en ondersteunde bewust de lokale middenstand’, legt Tom Flynn uit, de events co-ordinator . ‘Obama kwam hier vaak met zijn dochters om jeugdboeken. Hij nam meestal ook iets voor zichzelf mee naar huis.’ Welk soort boeken dat waren, komen we niet te weten. ‘Dat lijkt ons weinig respectvol.’
De manager hoopt stiekem dat Obama 57th Street Books niet is vergeten. ‘Zijn eerste twee boeken waren amper uit of Obama zat ze in onze winkel te signeren, wat natuurlijk veel publiek trekt. Het zou leuk zijn mocht hij ook zijn derde boek bij ons komen voorstellen, al kan ik me voorstellen dat zoiets tot gekke toestanden zou leiden nu hij president is. (citaat Nieuwsblad.be).

Wat ’57th Street Books’ bijzonder maakt is het feit dat deze winkel, samen met twee andere in dezelfde buurt, in eigendom is van de klanten. De grootste van de drie is een academische boekhandel die een van de grootste ter wereld is.
The Seminary Cooperative Bookstores is a cooperative bookstore with three branches in the Chicago area. Its flagship, known colloquially as the Seminary Co-op or simply the Sem Co-op, is located in the basement of the Chicago Theological Seminary, next to the campus of the University of Chicago, and stocks the largest selection of academic volumes in the United States.
In 1961 werd de boekhandel een ‘consumer-owned bookstore’, toen 17 klanten elk tien dollar investeerden in een fonds dat inmiddels is uitgegroeid tot een co-op met meer dan 53.000 leden. In 2007 had de co-op een omzet van 5 miljoen dollar.
In 1983 kwam de boekhandel 57th Street Books erbij en inmiddels is er ook een derde boekhandel bij aangesloten, de Newberry Library Bookstore.
De co-op heeft een webmagazine ‘The Front Table‘ die op deze bijzondere dag de homepage opent met:

We at the Seminary Co-op/57th Street Books feel that one appropriate way would be to contribute support to a local institution facing growing demands for its services: the Hyde Park & Kenwood Hunger Programs, which runs a soup kitchen in North Kenwood and a community food pantry in Hyde Park. As the economy has worsened, both programs have seen a sharp increase in demand in recent months.
