Krijgt Amerika eindelijk een Schrijversmuseum?
“Although nobody has compiled a precise inventory, the American Association of Museums estimates there are 17,500 museums of varying sizes in this country celebrating everything from the natural sciences, the fine arts, automobiles and railroads to baseball, rock and roll, seafaring, and aviation. There are remarkable libraries and research collections, to be sure, many of which mount magnificent exhibitions of books, manuscripts, and archives that include selections from their own vast holdings, but no museum in the traditional sense – a temple of the muses, literally – to inspire and educate the general public on the history, culture, and influence of the great literary canon that is our shared inheritance.”
Deze constatering staat in een column van de bekende schrijver Nicholas A. Basbanes, waarin hij schrijft over het initiatief van Malcolm O’Hagan, initiatiefnemer en voorzitter van The American Writers Museum Foundation.
O’Hagan, gepensioneerde CEO van de National Electrical Manufacturers Association, begon zijn stimulerende werk vorig jaar, nadat hij geïnspireerd werd door een bezoek aan het Dublin Writers Museum. Het streven van de stichting is om als startkapitaal 200 miljoen dollar bijeen te brengen, liefst van 1 of 2 grote sponsors.
Het is de bedoeling binnenkort van start te gaan met een reizende tentoonstelling – ‘Finding Home: Immigrant Voices in American Literature’ – die te zien zal zijn in de hoofdbibliotheken in de grootste steden van de US. Dit is bedoeld om het publiek warm te maken voor het idee van een ‘echt’ schrijversmuseum en tegelijk stadsbesturen te verleiden om het museum als attractie binnen te halen.
Er zijn besprekingen gaande met het stadsbestuur van Chicago, waar misschien een tijdelijke vestiging komt voor een periode van vijf jaar. Maar de definitieve vestiging hangt af van de geldschieters. “We’d love for it to be in Chicago, that’s our hope, but it will ultimately be where the money comes from”, aldus Malcolm O’Hagan.
