‘The Grimani Breviary’ – one of the most famous and best known illuminated manuscripts – for sale

The codex is one of the most famous and best known illuminated manuscripts. It contains 831 pages with 110 pictures all of them in a decorated frame. The miniatures represent different styles, some of them are attributed to Hans Memling, while others to Alexander and Simon Bening. The origin of the codex is unknown, its name is after Dominico Grimaldi, Cardinal of Venice who bought it in 1520 for 500 golden ducates.

This manuscript, which contains 110 wonderful miniatures, was intended not only for use in the Church, but also in the private home as well.”

UPDATE - Op 2 juli 2012 ontving de Koninklijke Bibliotheek een exemplaar van dit kostbare facsimile ten geschenke. De Regio Veneto schenkt de facsimile (ter waarde van ruim € 20.000) aan de KB, in een culturele promotiecampagne in samenwerking met het Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Amsterdam. Een klein aantal prestigieuze bibliotheken van internationale faam is uitverkoren om een ‘Grimani’ in ontvangst te nemen, waaronder de British Library, the Library of Congress en nu dus ook de Koninklijke Bibliotheek. lees meer
