‘People in the World of Print’ – an online exhibition McGill Library
The bibliomania : or, Book-madness; containing some account of the history, symptoms and cure of this fatal disease, in an epistle addressed to Richard Heber, esq. / By Thomas Frognall Dibdin, F.S.A. London : Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, by W. Savage, 1809.
In this earlier version of the much larger 1811 volume, Dibdin described the symptoms of Bibliomania, which included insatiable desires for uncut pages, fine papers and vellums, unique copies, first editions, black letter books, illustrated copies, and suppressed or condemned works. While he condemned the commercialization of literature and scopophilic inclinations of bibliomania, Dibdin did find value in the collectors’ contributions to the preservation of a rich literary heritage. He identified a possible cure for Bibliomania in the production of more useful and profitable books, the re-printing of valuable volumes, and the erection of public lending libraries.
