The Hive – een nieuwe bibliotheek, voorbereid op klimaatverandering
Op 11 juli 2012 zal deze nieuwe bibliotheek, The Hive in Worcester, worden geopend door de Engelse koningin Elisabeth. Het is voor de UK de eerste maal dat een openbare en een universiteitsbibliotheek in één gebouw zijn samengevoegd.
Housing the University and Public Library services in a fully integrated way with the amazing variety of collections being open to all. Part of the offering is a magical children’s library with spaces to get creative; a Heritage Trail to explore and a huge range of books, CDs and DVDs to enjoy.
Een tweede bijzonderheid is dat duurzaamheid het leidende principe was bij het ontwerp van dit gebouw. De schoorsteenachtige vorm van de daken is speciaal ontworpen ten behoeve van een natuurlijke ventilatie van het gebouw.
Sustainability was a high priority throughout: The Hive maximises daylight and natural ventilation via the seven iconic roof cones that echo the undulating ridgeline of the Malverns and the historic kilns of the Royal Worcester pottery. Water from the river Severn provides peak cooling and locally sources biomass provides heating. The building is designed to adapt to climate change predicted by UK-CIP to 2050.
