‘Käännös’ won the architectural competition for the new Central Library of Helsinki
 The decision of the jury was unanimous. According to the evaluation protocol, Helsinki is going to have an urban space which being surrounded by architectonically high-class buildings is exceptionally grand and modern on an international level. The library building now has the purpose of making the eastern side of the open space complete.
The jury describes Käännös as impressive and casually generous. Käännös is an excellent starting point when it comes to developing new kinds of library functions.
Furthermore, the jury emphasizes that the building addresses you in a unique manner and has every chance of becoming a new monumental building that the Helsinkians, those using the library and the employees consider their own.Â
The traditional, serene library atmosphere can be found on the top floor. This will be a calm and contemplative area floating above the busy central Helsinki. It will offer unobstructed, majestic views to the surrounding park and cityscape.
Voor het ontwerp van de nieuwe bibliotheek werd een internationale ontwerpwedstrijd uitgeschreven met maar liefst 544 inzendingen (hier zijn er een aantal te zien). Zes projecten werden uitgekozen voor de ‘shortlist‘ en uiteindelijk werd het ontwerp van architectenbureau ALA uitverkoren.
In 2017 zou de nieuwbouw – 16.000 m2 – gereed moeten zijn. Voor het gebouw is 70 miljoen euro uitgetrokken.
