Wellicht heeft u afgelopen week het bericht gelezen over het veilingrecord bij Christie’s in New York, bij de verkoop van een manuscript van president Lincoln, op 12 februari 2009.
New York – In today’s sale of Abraham Lincoln’s 1864 Victory Speech, Christie’s achieved $3,442,500 and set a new auction record for a Lincoln manuscript, a presidential manuscript and any American historical document.
Het ging hierbij om vier velletjes, waarop Lincoln de tekst had uitgeschreven van de toespraak die hij op 10 november 1864 in het Witte Huis hield, na zijn herverkiezing als president.
Het document was sinds 1928 in het bezit van een plattelandsbibliotheek, de Southworth Library in Dryden in de staat New York. De bibliotheek besloot het manuscript te verkopen om een aanbouw aan het bestaande gebouwtje te kunnen betalen. Het manuscript en de herkomst ervan, één van de zes waardevolle historische items uit hun collectie, wordt door de bibliotheek zelf als volgt omschreven:
– Southworth Library owns the original manuscript of an address by Abraham Lincoln given on the occasion of winning his second term as President in 1865. It was given to John Dwight, Congressman from Dryden, by Lincoln’s son, Robert, in appreciation of Dwight’s support of the Lincoln Memorial Project in Washington, DC. Dwight presented it to the Library in 1926. The manuscript is kept in a secured, off-site location. It has been publicly displayed only a few times, most notably during the bicentennial celebration in 1976. Townspeople gathered for a glimpse of the historic words, originally penned by Mr. Lincoln.
