King James Bible 400 jaar in gebruik
2 mei 2011 – Vandaag is het precies 400 jaar geleden dat de bijbelvertaling gereed kwam waarvoor de Engelse Koning James I in januari 1604 opdracht had gegeven. Het is nu als ‘King James Version’ nog altijd de meest gedrukte en gebruikte bijbel in de Engelstalige wereld.
Van de eerste editie die in 1611 werd gedrukt door Robert Barker, the King’s Printer, is zeldzaam. In de talloze edities die daarna door verschillende drukkers werden vervaardigd zaten veel verschillen. Spelling en interpunctie werden vaak naar eigen inzicht aangepast. In 1769 legden wetenschappers van de universiteit van Oxford al die edities naast elkaar en vonden 24.000 verschillen. Er werd in Oxford een tekst vastgelegd in nieuwe spelling die nu nog steeds geldt als standaard.
Voor de viering van de 400e verjaardag is The King James Bible Trust opgericht die een breed scala van activiteiten initieerd:

* Study days in some cities following James’s route from Scotland to London, focusing on the translation story
* Lectures at Oxford and Cambridge, where the translators worked
* Developing educational school projects
* Publishing new texts
* Discussions about similar values in the texts of the world’s major religions
* Major exhibitions in London and around the country where the translations were made
* Street culture projects
Het herdenkingsjaar wordt op 16 november 2011 afgesloten in de Westminster Abbey.
