The St Cuthbert Gospel of St John, also known as the Stonyhurst Gospel, is a small 7th-century pocket gospel book, written in Latin, which belonged to Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, who died in 687. The book was discovered in 1104 when Cuthbert’s tomb was opened so that his relics could be translated to a new shrine behind the altar of Durham Cathedral.

“It is currently owned by the British Province of the Society of Jesus, which has offered the British Library first option to acquire the work.”

“A spokesman for the British Province of the Society of Jesus, said: “We are delighted that this rare text is likely to be fittingly housed, and congratulate the library on a successful start to the fundraising campaign.”

Aanvulling.

According to an inscription pasted to the inside cover of the manuscript, the Stonyhurst Gospel was obtained by the 3rd Earl of Lichfield (d. 1772) who gave it to Reverend Thomas Phillips (d. 1774) who donated it to the English Jesuit College at Liège on 20 June 1769. The manuscript has been owned since 1769 by the Society of Jesus (British Province) and was formerly in the library of Stonyhurst College, Lancashire, successor to the Liège college. It has been on loan to the British Library since 1979 where it has been (almost) permanently on display in its exhibition gallery (first in the British Museum building, and now at the new St Pancras site of the Library).
